To get to know a country better, you can easily mingle with shoppers at markets. At the various markets on the island, you can taste the real Curaçao life. Discover local products, delicious food and a piece of culture at the daily market. Scattered throughout Curaçao are several well-known markets (also often at a ‘Hofi’). We have listed a few for you!

Marshe Nobo

The most famous and largest market in Curaçao is Marshe Nobo, also called the “new market” or “round market. This market is located in the historic center of Punda, the center of Willemstad. The name round market is there for a reason, as the market is shaped like a circle. It consists of one floor and is the ideal place to buy nice souvenirs. The market is open all week, from morning until late afternoon, except on Sundays. You do not need to schedule a whole day off to visit the market, as you will walk through it rather quickly. Still, it is definitely worth taking a look!

Plasa Bieu

Want to taste real local food? You will find Plasa Bieu in the monumental downtown area, next to the round market. Plasa Bieu is a daily market (food market) with several stalls where you can get lots of goodies especially around lunchtime. The arrangement is made so that you can sit at the long picnic tables at several local cuisines.

The Floating Market

At the Pontjesbrug on the Handelskade in Willemstad, wooden boats from Venezuela dock along the canal, and vendors offer freshly caught fish and tropical fruits and vegetables (plantains, citrus, papayas, avocados) here. This is done directly from the wharf under the shade of tents. Other stalls selling local items can also often be found next to the Floating Market. Mornings are the best time to visit this cozy market. This is because of the best selection of products, the cooler temperatures before the afternoon sun shines and the pleasant atmosphere of the hours before the crowds begin.

Punda Nights

As a rule, Curaçao has no evening sales. This makes it extra special that every Thursday there is an event in town where the stores and market stalls can be visited until late. This is possible during Punda Vibes/Punda Night at the cozy market. Besides shopping, there are also several musicians who perform their skills.

Where do you market?

So, leisurely strolling around the market is, for those who want to, quite doable on the island. Curaçao benefits greatly from local markets, as there are mostly locals filling these stands. This way you contribute to the island’s economy, without necessarily supporting large companies.
