Curaçao, located near the equator, has a tropical savanna climate. Because the Caribbean is close to the equator, its weather and climate are characterized by warm temperatures throughout the year. As such, it is a popular destination for sunbathers. Curaçao’s average temperature is around 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27°C) with year-round humidity as high as 80%. This is quite a lot higher than in the Netherlands, for example. With its tropical climate, sunny days and pleasant trade winds, Curaçao offers great weather year-round. That makes it perfect for outdoor activities such as beach hanging, snorkeling and diving.
Pleasant daytime temperatures
The warmest month of the year in Curaçao is August with an average daily temperature of 30°C. July follows closely behind with average tropical temperatures of 29°C. It is often inadvisable to visit the island during these months with such hot days. Even locals tend to seek cooler weather in countries other than Curaçao. In contrast, January through March are usually the coolest months with pleasant temperatures of 27°C.
Actually, March through May is the best time for people who can’t stand excessively high temperatures. By the way, the average temperature never drops below 20 °C. Even in winter months like December, when they hit a low of 22°C. This is incredibly cold for locals, by the way. Despite its location close to the equator, temperatures rarely rise above 34°C due to its proximity to large bodies of water, such as the Caribbean Sea. Of course, the wind chill can be quite different again, especially if there is no wind.

Sun hours
On average, Curaçao has around eight hours of sunshine per day, making it a very sunny place to visit. With an annual average of more than 3,000 hours of sunshine, the island is typically exceptionally bright. Throughout the year there is a good balance of cloudy and sunny days. Even during the rainy times of the year.
Don’t count on only totally cloudless days, however, when visiting Curaçao, as there are usually clouds in the sky. In fine weather, you are more likely to see the beautiful white clouds, but dark, ominous thunderstorm clouds are always a possibility. Yet even then, a downpour is not guaranteed.
The island is so small that many storm clouds simply pass over it and dump their rain on the much wetter mainland of Venezuela. You may also find that at Jan Thiel Beach (in the east) you are sitting in the rain, while at Cas Abou (in the west) you are sitting in full sun. One of the reasons why Curaçao is so popular for a vacation in the sun is the high probability that you will be nice and warm during your stay.
Rainy season
Rainfall on Curaçao varies considerably, sometimes depending on the part of the island you are visiting. The rainy season in which most rain falls lasts from October to April and averages about 20 millimeters of precipitation per month. This wet season has some heavy rains, but also some dry periods when days or even weeks the amount of precipitation is zero. Total rainfall can range from as little as 10 millimeters of precipitation per month in January to 40 centimeters per month in October and November. These are considered the wettest months on Curaçao and are sometimes typified by days of cloudy weather.
Apart from these months, however, rainfall remains relatively constant during most other parts of the year. However, the effects of climate change are visible in recent years. One notices on the island that the rainy periods with short showers last longer than before. Something that does cause Curaçao to turn beautifully green!

Hurricane season
From early June to early December, hurricanes and other tropical storms can hit the Caribbean. However, Curaçao is rarely hit by such powerful storms because it lies below the traditional supply routes of hurricanes and depressions. As a result, Curaçao has no real hurricane season. What the island particularly suffers from is the subsiding winds during this season. This can make for sweltering hot temperatures.
The Leeward Islands, to which Curaçao belongs, are so named for a reason. Hurricanes rarely make landfall on the island, but the area is no stranger to destruction by these powerful storms. The so-called Windward Islands. When a hurricane forms north of Curaçao, the resulting high winds and waves can have devastating effects on the island’s coastline. It is also conceivable that a lot of rain could suddenly fall because hurricane depressions are nearby.
Wonderful climate
All in all, thanks to its location near the equator and proximity to major waters such as the Caribbean Sea, Curaçao has a sunny climate characterized by warm temperatures throughout most of the year. This combined with occasional heavy rain. So there are also dry periods when it does not rain for days or even weeks. Sunshine varies depending on the period you visit, but generally varies between eight and 12 hours a day during most parts of the year. Are you ready for a sun-drenched vacation?
